The air in schools is more polluted than the streets...

It is the surprising synthesis of an extensive survey commissioned by the Ministry of the Environment to FEDERASMA Onlus (the Federation of Italian Associations for the support of asthmatic and allergic patients) and ISPRA (the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research).

The main contents of the surveys were illustrated during a conference entitled "Quality of the air in schools: a duty of all, a right of children" which made public the final results of the inspections carried out in schools in Lombardy, Lazio, Piedmont, Sardinia, Sicily and Emilia Romagna.

The analyses showed, in particular, the interactions between indoor and outdoor pollution: traffic, bus stops and other sources raise the values of fine particles ( PM10) that, entering classrooms, reach concentrations even above 80 μg/m3 (for outdoor, the threshold is 40 μg/m3).

A further internal contribution to the powders also comes from the use of chalk for the blackboard that continues to be used in all schools.

In Italy, of the over 1000 children surveyed (13 schools and 6 different regions), almost 30% suffer from allergic rhinitis and 20% cough frequently.

But the precarious air quality in our schools also depends on the substances released from furniture, paints and cleaning products. In addition, humidity, bad ventilation and heat also increase other allergens such as mites, mold and pollen, as well as causing an increase in some volatile chemical pollutants.

Within the school buildings, moreover, the concentrations of formaldehyde (chemical pollutant that is released into the air by furniture, adhesive glues, paints, household detergents and dust-eating sprays) were higher than the average of other European schools.

Dust, allergens and chemicals in the air can trigger allergic and asthmatic crises in sensitive children and increase the days of absence at school.

To combat pollution in schools experts recommend the use of "poison-eating" plants (capable of absorbing pollutants) such as the Boston Fern, or repaint classes using photo-catalytic or ecoactive paints.

Or, to prevent pandemic outbreaks from Covid-19, you can equip yourself with a professional air purifier, such as the AIR 300 that ensures a constant cleaning of the air we breathe.

Thanks to its filtering system, the device eliminates all kinds of viruses (including Covid-19), bacteria, mold, parasites and pathogenic micro-organisms, the most effective solution against pollutants that infest classrooms and corridors.

In addition to its quietness (which makes it compatible with the conduct of the lessons), through a sophisticated process of air monitoring, the AIR 300 is able to sanitize an entire area of 1200 m3/h.
